Amex points for Japan: what to check before transferring
A practical Japan planning checklist for Membership Rewards balances, eligible programs and award searches.
Prepared September 10, 2026. Official resources reviewed on that date; verify your signed-in terms and current availability before transferring.
Begin in Membership Rewards
American Express provides an ANA transfer entry in its US Membership Rewards transfer service. Sign in to review your own eligible account, the displayed ratio, minimum, increments and estimated processing time. Do not assume terms from another country apply to your US card.
Search before committing
Choose an actual Japan itinerary and passenger count, then verify the award directly with the booking program. Check its current one-way or round-trip rules, permitted connections and cancellation terms. This guide supplies no live ANA inventory or fixed mileage quote.
Keep each points currency separate
An Amex balance and an existing airline balance can support the same booking only if the transfer is eligible and credits to the account you will use. Two balances held in unrelated programs cannot simply be added into one spendable airline balance.
A practical planning worksheet
Record departure airport, Japanese arrival airport, dates, passengers, segment cabins, mileage total and cash charges. Then record the transfer ratio and timing from your account. For a fictional 60,000-mile booking with 10,000 miles already in the booking account, the shortfall is 50,000 miles; convert that shortfall using the verified transfer terms, not a guessed rate.
Build your own starting plan
Try the example first, then create an account to enter your real balances and travel goals.
Actual searches require eligible connected Seats.aero access and subscription access. See requirements and pricing.
