LAX to Tokyo with points: build a search plan

Plan a Los Angeles to Tokyo award search around your dates, travelers and transferable points.

Start with the whole trip

Write down your travel window, number of travelers and cabin before looking at points prices. For Tokyo, consider both Haneda and Narita as search inputs. Treat the return trip as a separate requirement: a promising outbound option alone is not a complete vacation.

Compare the booking programs

The airline flying the plane and the program selling the award may differ. Aeroplan lets members redeem for Air Canada and partner-airline flights. Include it as one research option when your eligible points can transfer there; verify the actual flight and partner inventory in a current search. This guide does not claim a particular LAX–Tokyo award is available.

A worked planning example

Suppose a fictional outbound quote is 50,000 miles per person. Two travelers need 100,000 miles for that direction before taxes and fees. An 80,000-point wallet would be 20,000 short under an assumed 1:1 transfer. A different transfer ratio changes that calculation; do not reuse the same 80,000 points to cover the return flight.

Your search checklist

Search the full passenger count together. Compare nearby dates, both Tokyo airports, connection duration and the cabin on every segment. Confirm the booking program’s final total and cancellation rules before transferring. Keep a cash alternative in case award space disappears.
